This is to inform you that there's an
extensive AH interview in the November issue
of 'Guitarre & Bass' (in German).
There's some funnies (and mistakes) in the
discography that accompanies the interview.
I may dive into that later...

Sorry to hear about re-crossing the border problems from Canada into the
US. I may be able to help with a solution to this.
There is a place called Point Roberts, it is in the USA, but ironically the
only way to get to it is through Canada. There is a large club there called
"Breakers". It is not too different than the Town Pump as a gig, but many
well known bands play there on a regular basis: Jeff Healy plays there
regularly.
Despite it not being in downtown anywere (except Pt Roberts) Breakers
attracts a lot of Greater Vancouver area people mainly for the cheap beer.
But it maybe worthwhile checking it out for a possible gig. People from
Vancouver will certainly make the 45 minute ride to Pt Roberts.
Theoretically this should eliminate any border crossing problems.
The address and phone number is: Breakers Cabaret 531 Marine Drive, Pt
Roberts WA phone 206-945-2300.
Hope this helps.
PS Nobody told me which Level 42 album Allan plays on as yet.

There's a reason it was missing by Sunday: it was stolen. Chris Hoard
e-mailed me to say that someone had walked in during the day sometime
that week and walked out with the controller. They left the console
behind (and of course either piece without the other is little more
than an expensive doorstop).
The world is full of idiots and jerks.

There's a lot of work yet to be done (and we still have to get a
check out to Chuck Shotton, author of MacHTTP -- forgive us, Chuck,
for we are slow), but if you want to take a gander at it, point your
favorite browser application at:
http://suppcoo.morehead-st.edu/atav/docs/home.html
This is running on a Macintosh Centris 610; it will (hopefully) soon
be relocated to a Hewlett-Packard HP-UX server, but I'll try to keep
the above URL around with a pointer to the newer location once we move.
I don't have any of the usual "help" documents on the listserv
updated to mention the WWW page (or how to get browsers, etc. -- I'm
going to HOPE that everyone on the list will be able to figure SOME of
these things out, lest I toil overmuch on documentation!), but there
will be a few pointers in the near future. I also plan to revamp the
FAQ to take advantage of anchors within the FAQ itself, add some links
to other sites (hello, Ron C.!), and with any luck, figure out a bit
about CGI and try my hand at some interactivity (i.e. subscriptions,
surveys, etc. -- but this will probably come later, rather than sooner
-- volunteers gladly exploited, heh!).
Have at it. Send me your feedback, please (and your image files)! ;)

I was at the show on Thursday of the week he was there, and after the first
two tunes, he said "Has anyone seen the Synthaxe?" and we all laughed,
including the band, and then he said "No, I'm serious, has anyone seen the
Synthaxe? It was right there before the show" and indicated an empty guitar
stand. It was bizarre, but all evening he played the standard guitar, and
many were commiserating with him after the show about the loss; the guitar
tech was wandering around all show and consulting with Allan afterward,
writing down serial numbers and such.
Oh, as a side note, Ric Ocasek came in for the last few tunes, too.

Does anyone know anything about the Jeff Watson CD that Allan plays on,
it's called "Lone Ranger". Does he play on the whole thing, or just one song?
Also, with regards to the book "Just for the Curious", do the song
transcriptions correspond to the songs played live on the video (REH)? If
they do, then a live recording of Allan is available!!!!

I don't have any info on this album. Was Holdsworth in the studio
working with Frank Gambale, or did he just get sent the tapes to add his
work to?
Who's the band on the album?
Who's Mark Varney?
The guitar solos are spiffing on this album, but a lot of those Brecker

Anyway, your assistance would be appreciated.

He's Mike Varney's brother. :) He owns Legato Records, and tries to
get exposure for unknown guitarists -- generally of the ultra-shred

Jeff,
Couldn't tell from the post I saw (on rec.music.makers.guitar) whether
this reply will go to you or to an intermediary...hope it reaches you
somehow!
I live in North San Diego County, near where Allan moved recently. I have
seen him a few times at Guitars West, a vintage shop that I (and Allan)
frequent. This summer he stopped by for their July 4th party and ended
up out in the parking lot jamming with the house band on Allman Brothers
tunes and old blues stuff. It was surreal - the rest of the gunslingers
were up on the makeshift stage (actually the front porch of the store)
while Allan was twenty feet away, standing behind a big roof-support
beam and chatting with party-goers between solos. There were maybe 40
people left at the party and colorful fireworks were blasting off in the
little park across the street. A really magical eveninalg
I also got to see Allan give a clinic at the same shop a few months ago.
He was, as he put it, "sick as a parrot", but he graciously answered
the endless questions and played some truly moving music, repeatedly
apologizing for his "shabby" performance while we sat slack-jawed. We
talked a bit afterwards and I was once again impressed by what a truly
nice person he seems to be.
I hope people support Allan's music enough for him to continue pursuing
his vision. He's a great player and a fine human being and I think it's
that combination that makes his music so wonderful.

I just read Kevin Spangler's note about Allan Holdsworth and was pleased to
hear his impression of Holdsworth's humanity. I'm intrigued by the different
elements that contribute to our understanding and enjoyment of music. It seems
like music is enriched when we feel an affinity for the musician as well as
the music. As an example, I've admired Steve Morse's technical facility since
his first solo album but never had a sense of him as a person. Recently I saw
him perform in a small club with the "new" Dixie Dregs and was most impressed
by his humorous stage presence. After seeing what a funny and articulate man
he is I enjoy his music even more. I suspect the same is true for Kevin and
his enjoyment of Allan Holdsworth's work. In contrast, I saw Al DiMeola in a sm
all club during his Metheny-clone era. I really looked forward to seeing him bu
t was shocked at his rude response to the audience's requests for him to play s
ome earlier material. I can't hear him now without remembering his behaviour on
stage. To be charitable, he may have been having an off night.

Chris Manuel wrote about his experiences meeting guitarists...
I have been fortunate to meet:
Allan Holdsworth - I actually tripped his feet over mine going
to the "green room" to get an autograph at a small club in
Phoenix! He was VERY nice about it (no, we didn't go crashing to
the ground) and acted shy about people coming to talk to him.
Al DiMeola - just hung out after a concert and listened to others
ask him questions. He was rude, egotistic, and holier-than-all-of-us.
John McLaughlin - my dreams answered! Spent time back stage and he
was extremely generous with all of us hanging about.
Phil Keaggy - maybe you don't know his name because he's been in
Christian music for years, but you should - one of America's finest
players. Also one of the NICEST people I've met - musician or not!

My two cents worth: I've never met Allan Holdsworth (though I saw him in
1988 when I was just fifteen years old), but an uncle who's met him couldn't
say enough about him. Met Robert Fripp (somewhat cold), Adrian Belew (who
always seems to make time for his fans--great guy) Bill Bruford (quiet, but
very nice) and Lee Ritenour (unassuming, funny). Interesting people, all.

Well, I rented it last night, so I can confirm it -- but I can't
confirm that it's *Allan*. I didn't hear anything in the soundtrack
that sounded like anything he'd do, so I'm skeptical... by now, I
think I could spot a Holdsworth solo with both ears tied behind my
back. ;)
Allan has been interested in pursuing soundtrack jobs for some time,
but I honestly think if he were involved in one of the box office
blockbusters of the year, it'd be tough to keep it a secret from *this*
crew!

Subject: Husband Alert...
Just a brief bulletin -- I was walking around in my usual weekly lunch-visit
trance at
Tower Records in Costa Mesa... and at the listening booth was a new release by
Billy
Cobham. I checked it out on the headphones--it didn't knock me out--the
production sounded
fair at best (could have been the headphones)... However--I noticed the little
add blurb
they print at the listening station directory, and had to laugh... Listed there
as the
featured guest artist was a certain Gary Husband "the ***keyboardist*** from
Level 42."
Some of you remember GH playing keyboard solos both on IOU and Wardenclyffe--he's
a monster
on more than one instrument for sure--but this sounded like Husband's first stab
at
really attacking the chores as a "dentist" (AH's term for someone who pounds
ivory)...
At least GH hasn't lowered his standard with regard to the drummers he records
with...
Little known GH Trivia: "City Nights" from Secrets was written by GH, and he
plays
keyboards on the track, but its V. Collaiuta (I'm pretty sure) who plays drums on
the track--as Chad played drums on the title track from WT, which features a
synth
solo by GH (hard for some possibly to distinguish from Synthaxe--which is the
second
solo on that piece)... Perhaps GH has decided to take the keyboard aspect of his
musicianship seriously for a change--AH has long hoped to produce a GH solo
project if
the timing and economic equations could be balanced--perhaps that day is
approaching;
I for one hope that's the case. As much as I admire Chad's efforts as a band
leader,
many of us have speculated Husband's efforts as a leader might prove to be one of
the more explosive and creative projects to come along in the quasi-fission vein.
I'm only afraid that when I first spin the CD, shards of drumsticks might start
flying out of my stereo cabinet...
Anybody check this one out??? I'll probably have to spring for it, and give it
another chance--but I'm curious what some of you might have to say...
Cheers/Chris

Ayup, it was Big Al hisself who was credited for the soloist spot
for the _Speed_ soundtrack, amazingly enough. I called him up, and he
said he had done a little bit on the ADAT for the film, but he was
unsure as to whether any of his contributions actually got used in the
final cut (personally, I think not; anyone else?). He said that the
person who did the music for the film, Mike Mancini (?), was "a fan,"
and gave him a shot at the project.
Amazing...

so I don't know if any incidental music would be found on the CD or

According to the on-line service CDConnection, there are two different
"Speed" CD's: one containing the film's actual score, the other with the
cheezy pop oriented songs. I would assume that we would be searching for
choice 'a'.

keyboard work here by GH. I wonder if he's decided to focus on keys? Anyway
for you Atachronian Trivial Pursuits--GH played keyboards on *three*
AH albums -- two as a soloist (IOU and WT), and one as a keyboard basic,
and he played drums on only *one* of these tracks.
Excuse me if you already read a similar post earlier--which track and
album did Husband play keys on, but did not solo or play drums?
Clue: AH's nickname for the drummer on that track is "Vindaloo."
I'm curious to hear any other takes on the new Cobham project--I'll probably
shell out my $14 to give this a serious listen...
Second rare AH trivia question: AH recorded on a well known jazz drummer's
album for a live Montreaux festival recording (circa '85?), and due to poor
recording conditions, and minimal rehearsal time AH and participant
violinist Didier Lockwood (apparently) convinced the leader never
to release the project. Hint: GH is his keyboardist...

Very nice reveiw of the Holdsworth chows. It's obvious you really listen
with love for Allen's artistry. I wanted to let you know that the
SynthAxe was apparently stolen before the first set on the Thursday show
During the second song, Allen looked around puzzled and asked the band
and crowd if anyone had seen it. Sad.
It's nice to hear from other fans. Take care.

Are you sure that's not Mike Mainieri, the jazz mallet player who put
together the Come Together album, to which Allan (with Gordon Beck)
contributed "Michelle"?
Also, is it just my memory, or have I never seen anyone mention that Allan
plays on two tracks of a Jack Bruce album from a few years back, the name of
which currently escapes me?

I'm sure, yes. :) But I misspelled his name: it's Mike MancinA, not
MancinI.

also features contributions from Ginger Baker, Gary Moore, Bernie Worrell,
Dick Heckstall-Smith, Maggie Reilly and others.
Among other past Bruce collaborators notable in their absence on this set:
Allan Holdsworth, Eric Clapton, Robin Trower, John McLaughlin.

I really like Holdsworth's regular guy, laid back attitude myself. I
wonder if anyone actually took him up on his offer to build a
genuine Allan Holdsworth(tm) Juice Extractor in exchange for a keg
of good brew.

No offense to Chris, but I personally find it rude to yell requests
at an established artist. At the last Holdsworth-and-band gig, I had
to resist the urge to yell "Shut the @#$@ up!!!" at those bozos who kept
shouting "Three Sheets To the Wind!", "Devil Take the Hindmost!",
etc. At least the audience at Allan's Guitars West/MESA Boogie
clinic had the courtesy to *not* request favorite hits from Allan.
I believe in letting an artist grow and develop; not trying to tie
him/her to his/her past. Thus, I'm not surprised at Di Meola's
reaction to such behaviour from the audience after putting up with
it night after night.
Professional performers have to put up with a lot of crap from
people in the audience getting drunk, yelling "Freebird!" at the top
of their lungs, throwing things, etc. So on the one hand, these
performers are only human and developing a thick skin; even to the
point of rudeness of their own, is one way some of them deal with
it.
On the other hand, I do admire artists who in spite of it all remain
warm and personable to all comers such as Holdsworth, Morse, Belew,
etc.
> Phil Keaggy - maybe you don't know his name because he's been in

I sometimes see his stuff in the jazz section. The fact that he's
missing a finger on his right doesn't seem to impede him at all. In
fact, he is a mind-blowing, consummate guitarist, equally dangerous
on acoustic (easily gives Michael Hedges a run for his money) and
electric (has a fluid, sustaining voice, one of the few who plays
legato style without sounding like Holdsworth). He's also the best E-Bow
user I've heard.
Does Allan play on Vinnie Colaiuta's new CD? I heard a cut off of it
on the radio, very intriguing chord progression and rhythm; not what
I expected given the "GRP" warning label. My only criticism of that
cut is that it could use a hot solo (don't get me wrong, I happen to
enjoy a lot of ambient type music, but this cut was arranged in such
a way it virtually demanded a solo). Michal Landau does play guitar
on it but he just makes a few noises, throws in a scorching run
which could have turned into a great solo, but instead settles for
playing rhythm guitar. Perhaps Vinnie should have brought in Allan
to solo over that track.

Paolo, I certainly wasn't condoning the behaviour of yelling requests. I agree
that every artist should have the freedom to grow and change. I was trying to u

I didn't think you were condoning that behaviour. This discussion provoked
me to air my views about an aspect of audience behaviour that bothers
me from time to time. I know some people who refuse to listen to Miles
Davis's music because they don't like him as a person; to me this is valid
because we all experience music differently. However, maybe just that
little warm feeling that I get from knowing that Allan Holdsworth is a
decent man does enhance my listening experience. Who knows?

It's a mailing list for people interested in music technology as applied
to guitar and other string instruments, so MIDI, processing, and recording
are indeed covered there. Some Atavachron folks have signed up, having
heard about it here. I hope I'm not stealing your thunder, Jeff ;)

I notice that Holdsworth's entry has been expanded 8-fold in the new Penguin

the new one. I'd say he came out pretty well (ratings are out of 4 stars,
with a very rare 5th star--or a crown in the new edition--given to what they
consider the most outstanding recordings):
I.O.U: 2.5
Metal Fatigue: 3
Atavachron: 3.5
Sand: 3
With A Heart In My Song: 3
Secrets: 3
Wardenclyffe Tower: 3.5

They recommend that newcomers start with Wardenclyffe, then pick up

Subject: A Visit To Starr Switch Co.
Date: Fri, 16 Dec 1994 17:53:16 -0800 (PST)
Due to some Allan content, I've decided to post this to Atavachron:
Before I begin, I should cover myself by stating that the following
is not intended to endorse Starr Switch products over and above
other competitive products in the MIDI controller market.
Today I paid a visit to Starr Switch Co., operated by fellow San
Diegan Harvey Starr. Harvey graciously gave me a mini-tour of his
offices and laboratories.
The first thing he showed me was a new product he is building for
Living Colour guitarist/leader Vernon Reid. It's a folding(!) MIDI
guitar controller with a mounting frame for a Yamaha QY20 and other
portable units. Reid came up with the idea for a portable songwriting
system for guitarists; a MIDI controller with instrument, sequencer,
and sound source in a compact package that can be easily stowed away
in an airline luggage compartment.
The next type of item was the Z-Tar line of MIDI controllers. These
are somewhat guitar-like in appearance in that they have a neck and
a body. However, instead of six strings, there are six rows of 24
velocity-sensitive keys that correspond to the notes of a guitar
fretboard. Harvey says he's working on making the fretboard keys
aftertouch-sensitive as well. The four types of what Harvey calls
"scan modes" are:
Trigger On - Trigger fretted notes with the six trigger bars.
Trigger Off - Tap on the fretboard to produce notes; six trigger
bars not necessary to produce notes but can be used to trigger
something else (chords, other notes, etc.).
Guitar - One note maximum per "string". If two notes are triggered
on the same string, the higher one will sound.
Poly - More than one note per "string" simultaneous, up to the number
of keys in the row making up that "string" (20 or 24 notes). This
means you can, for example, tap two notes two frets apart (a major
second) on the same "string" and thus be able to produce close-voiced
chords normally impossible on guitar. An entire chord can be tapped
on one "string" if so desired.
The trigger bars are pressure sensitive. A common application would
be to use them to continously vary the volume of a note; pressing
harder to make the note louder and releasing a bit to make the note
softer. On the body of the Z-Tar are also six large pressure-sensitive
pads to which continuous controllers may be assigned. I won't go
too much into detail about what can be mapped where here because it
would take hours; I'll just say that the Z-Tar offers a lot of
programmability. Available options are a joystick controller
(programmable of course), a general-purpose LCD display with
programming keypad, and a string-picking assembly to replace the six
trigger keys with actual strings to provide velocity information.
There are also a ton of other features, like the ability to record a
chord and assign it to a pressure pad on the fly, that I won't go into
detail; again due to space and time considerations.
Harvey spent some time impressing me with the capabilities of the
Z-Tar, performing solo pieces by two-handed tapping and demonstrating
the various functionalities like selecting between different tunings
(including the ability to switch between "lefty" and regular tuning)
and selecting different sounds with the joystick (which is also
velocity sensitive). I got to doodle on the Z-Tar myself, observing
that the neck felt good in my left hand and was well-suited to
tapping. The Vernon Reid model adds a wooden frame to the diamond-
shaped body of the Z-Tar for a Strat-like shape (this was from a
suggestion by Reid).
The next item shown was the Z-Board, a tabletop model with 12 rows
of 23 keys color-coded in black and white in the manner of a piano.
The 12 "strings" are offset in fourths so that the keyboard appears
as 12 overlapping sections of a piano keyboard. The Z-Board operates
in a manner similar to the Z-Tar.
Next was the Z-Bass, similar to the Z-Tar except with four rows
of keys on the fretboard rather than six. Perhaps the neck is
longer just like the neck of a bass guitar is longer than a regular
guitar but I didn't take the time to verify this.
Next was a prototype of a new, lower cost model with a beautiful
wood housing on the sides and back (body still diamond-shaped). The
six pressure pads and six trigger bars on the body are replaced by the
equivalent pressure-sensitive membrane playing areas.
Finally, Harvey showed me some of the active add-on circuitry he
sells for guitars, like a preamp and a tone control.
Harvey has three high-profile artists who use his products. Stanley
Jordan offered to demo his Z-Tars and Z-Board for him at NAMM.
Vernon Reid has been previously mentioned. Allan Holdsworth
borrowed a Z-Board for the _Hard Hat Area_ recording session. In
fact, that very same Z-Board was sitting in Harvey's office today;
from what I recall, Harvey is either tweaking the velocity sensitivity
or adding aftertouch to it. Holdsworth (who also lives in the San
Diego vicinity) came in to try the Z-Tars and Z-Board and ended up
liking the Z-Board the most; he felt it fit his style best. After
I told Harvey about the unfortunate theft of Allan's SynthAxe, he
said he wanted to just give the Z-Board that Allan had borrowed
back to Allan for keeps; the problem is he needs money just like
Allan.
An interesting potential customer of Starr Switch is UC Irvine's
music department. They want Harvey to build a controller that will
allow them to play microtonal scales with as many as 6144 divisions
per octave; a controller with keys that are in a honeycomb kind of
configuration. They also want Harvey to make it ZIPI compatible
because ZIPI is supposed to offer the finer resolution necessary
for such scales. He seemed somewhat ambivalent about ZIPI;
understandably he says he would be *much* more motivated to go
through the trouble of learning ZIPI if UC Irvine would actually
send him a check for such an instrument. He showed me a letter from
them which in turn had a photocopied letter to them from none other
than our own Matt Wright, our resident ZIPI expert!
I conclude with a note of thanks to Harvey Starr for graciously
showing me around the premises of Starr Switch Co, wishing him the
best of luck with his business. I sincerely hope the University of
California at Irvine will send him a big fat check for two reasons:
1). The instrument they want sounds like an intriguing one and 2).
He'll be more likely to get into building ZIPI controllers. I do
feel there is a place for his instruments.

I've been going through Temporary Fault in "the uncommon chord" and, at least
to my ears, a lot of improvements to the chord symbols in the transcription
could be made. Strange, considering the high quality of most of the
stuff in there.
1) Most (all?) of the chords of the 1st form below should be replaced with the
second (below are just example fret numbers):
--- ---
-6- -2-
-6- -5-
-6- -3-
--- ---
-4- -4-
2) The bridge section seems to have a lot of wrong stuff. I think these chords
sound better/closer (pardon the crappy tab notation, I'm not used to this...;
for most of the single notes, the previous chord should be kept ringing):
---0-2-------------3--------5-2-----5--2----
-3---3-3-1-------4-4-2----5---3-3-5----3-3--

_Reaching For the Uncommon Chord_ is known to have quite a few errors,
which is why Allan is so unhappy with this book.

I just got a packet in the mail today with a bunch of interesting
stuff in it... photocopies of ads from _Melody Maker_, circa 1969-73,
advertising Igginbottom gigs; what I'm assuming are reduced photocopies
of some bootleg albums (going from the titles -- some of which are
familiar); etc. There's also a letter expressing the sender's pleasure
with the Atavachron interview, but the whole package arrived without a
return address, and the signature at the end of the enclosed letter is
not legible. I don't recall sending a copy of Chris Hoard's interview
to anyone in Reading, PA (where the envelope was postmarked), which
makes me wonder who may have sent this! If the sender is reading this,
please step forth and take credit. :)
Among the more interesting things in the package:
* One of the Melody Maker ads mentions a band, "Alan Jackson's
Kinkade," featuring Alan Jackson, Art Therman, Henry Lowther,
Dave Green *and* Allan Holdsworth (actually, it was misspelled
"Alan," but we're getting used to that by now, hmm?). Anyone
got any info on this band? The ad was dated 10/27/73, btw...
* A photocopied exerpt of a letter apparently from Dave Stewart,
responding to (assumedly) the anonymous sender's query regarding
the Bruford/Holdsworth collaboration that was discussed about a
year ago, but never got off the ground because of a lack of money.
Also enclosed is a page of notation titled "Main Theme from
'Sample & Hold' (Bruford/Stewart)," which appears to have been
written out by Dave Stewart himself.
* Various quotes from the likes of Frank Zappa, John McLaughlin,
Eddie Van Halen, etc.... all that stuff Allan hates to see the
record companies mention. ;)
