Subject: CD advice?

I very much like 'Sand' and the title track to 'Hard Hat Area'
by Holdsworth, can anyone advise me on an album I would
appreciate, with lots of Synthaxe, Oberheim and Breath
controller. I also am into those strobe like legato solos
on his guitars. I have heard that 'Atavachron' is good.
Please help an innocent list newbie to buy his next CD. I
think I am more into his avant-garde technical music than
laid back jazz. Please email me within two days or so.
Oodles of scrummy love,

More musings...

Experienced a nice antidote to the sort of attitudes I had griped about in a
pvs digest, responded to in detail (AD 110) by David Beardsley.

I had the torn/Bozzio/Karn disc (Polytown) on during lunch period in school
the other day, and when my Calculus students arrived for class it was still
playing. Several of the kids perked right up and asked that I keep it going.
Their assessment was that it was very interesting and sorta eastern sounding
("not all the usual piano notes you hear in western music" said one kid.)
Well it turns out that one of the girls is a huge jazz sax fan, and a few of
the guys are rockers looking for something more musically satisfying - sounds
like a *potential AH audience* to me, eh? Guess we'll be studying a bit more
than maths this year...

The catch is, 10 of the 11 kids in the class (and all of the interested ones)
are of Asian/middle eastern ethnic backgrounds, primarily Indian. Hmmm...
Their parents are first-generation immigrants - successful ones (doctors,
etc) - and I'm sure their musical tastes are more interesting than those of
the parents of the average American kid. The kids themselves are quite
americanized in dress, behavior, speech, and so on (well, they're a little
more articulate & thoughtful than average :-)) but it's clear they've grown
up in a far richer musical environment. All I can say is (to quote that
idiot humorist on the country music stations, entirely out of context) WAKE
UP AMERICA!!!

Of course, I'm not complaining; if these kids are the people who are gonna be
running the country in 30 years, we'll probably be in pretty good shape.

Hope you englishmen & women enjoy the UK portion of the AH tour. We
easterners/midwesterners are getting a tad impatient...

This year, it would seem the U.K. is *IT*. Don't feel bad -- even
though Allan lives in the U.S. now, he hasn't played a tour east of
the Mississippi River on two years. :-/ Your journey will be a lot
shorter than mine was this spring!

Here are the U.K. tour dates for Allan; once again, his support act
is (recent Atavachron subscriber) Single Bass (a/k/a Jennifer Moore).

All,

Just a quick gig review - Allan at the Jazz Cafe on the 7th October.

Jennifer (aka Single Bass) turned out another good performance. Amusing
banter between her and the crowd went:
Jennifer: "I hate playing to Allan's audiences - I always think
		   you're all top muso's..."
	Crowd: "We ARE!" :-) :-)

The band was the current line up of Allan Holdsworth, Gary Husband, Steve Hunt
and Skuli Sverisson.

The crowd contained the usual mass of guitarist types (OK, so that's me as
well), but there was also a great deal of interest in GH (who was in
amazing form). This could have been due to AH getting the lead write up in
the London Evening Standard's what-on-in Jazz section, with a favourable
mention of GH in there too.

Here's the track listing:

	 1) Ruhkukah
	 2) Funnels
	 3) [ Argh - can't remember. But know it well, of course :-) ]
	 4) Low Levels, High Stakes
	 5) Looking Glass
	 6) Pud Wud
	 7) Devil Take The Hindmost
	 8) House Of Mirrors
	 9) Water On The Brain
	10) GH drum solo
	11) The Things You See (well, one varitation of it :-)
	---
	12) Zone

Strangely, the above is almost exactly the same set as when I last saw Allan
in '93.

Overall, a reasonable gig - I've seen them on better form than this but it's
always good to see AH performing live.

TTFN, Jason

Hey, great... are the details forthcoming...?

I don't suppose Allan showed up unexpectedly at the Gong 25th
  Anniversary gig, did he?

Looks like this will be a short digest. Does this mean we're due
  another contest? ;)

I went to the Brentford gig on Thursday 6th because I was unexpectedly in
London. Took along two neophytes to bolster the numbers. This was part of my
first unofficial stag night so the memory gets a bit hazy, but anyway.
  Obvious bragging bit:
Spoke to AH in the bar for a few mins before the concert - he remembered me
from the Tokyo gigs earlier in the year - where I am sure I made a complete
pain of myself since I became wasted while he was playing. This seems to be a
common occurrence as he has a tendency to play in bars. Due to this, I was a
bit too pushy after the gig. However, before the gig, I persuaded him to let
me pay for his beers (an honour for me) as we had been chatting in a local bar.
On the second night, I got him and the whole band to autograph some album
covers. They were all great and very tolerant of my enthusiasm.
In Brentford, I mentioned the new Holdsworth transcription book available in
Tokyo (contains loads of excellent stuff inc. full solos). He did not seem too
pleased at this as he seemed unaware of it and probably was not getting any
royalties for it (plus it makes it easier for morons like me to analyse what he
does). I asked if he would like a copy of it but he said no.
He also expressed an interest in getting his hands on the 'Velvet Darkness'
original tapes as I managed to get this album in Tokyo a couple of years ago
(with alternate takes of a quite few tracks). Maybe this is the version
referenced in the FAQ. It is on a Sony label.
I asked if he had heard of this list, he said yes, which is probably obvious
given the previous info hereby obtained - and the fact that the merchandise
table had flyers advertising it :(.
I introduced one of my friends who said he had only heard the 'Metal Forces'
album once but was interested in seeing him - aarrrghh. Neither of us
corrected him.
Yet another embarrassing meeting with AH where I prove my complete
un-coolness.

However the concert was great (apart from the smoke monsters - you know who
you are :) ) - Alan as ever was completely amazing, my 'metal forces' friend
was pretty shocked but it was Gary Husband's night, he was a frenzy of energy
and didn't lose concentration at all, even when sticks went flying.
AH did not play the long solo chordal improvisation that he did in Tokyo but
the set sounded pretty similar otherwise. Skuli and Hunt sounded a bit
rusty/nervous, both were better in Tokyo. The encore seemed to be a half hour
improvisation, it was great (obviously).
By this time, I was almost completely zonked and we wandered about saying hi
to people we didn't know including a drummer from Canada who we mistook for
somebody else. We spoke to Skuli for a while, he was really friendly but I'm
not sure how he took the Icelandic swearing (unfortunately the only Icelandic
we know). He didn't seem offended, but he didn't seem amused either.
Also spoke to the support act who was reclining in a chair behind the
merchandise desk, maybe hoping to sell copies of her CD (hi Jennifer - I assume
you are on this list). She was friendly too. She performed as 'Single Bass'
Virtuosic yet musical bass playing (oft flanged) with whimsical (is that ok?
unfair?) emotional vocals. She is connected to the internet but I left the
blurb at home (SB@'something'.demon.co.uk - off the top of my head). I
understand that she is touring with AH and definitely complements his
performance. Worth checking out if you are into originality.
I hope this was of interest to you,

Martin.

P.S. I'm leaving Tokyo at the end of the month so getting copies of the
transcription book for people would be enormously difficult. Also will be
leaving the internet (and this list) then. Hopefully I will be back in a few
months from the UK.

Actually, I found a discarded E.S. on the train home and had to check for
a mention. It was only about 3 column inches, usual promo blurb. I spotted
(what I though were) loads of errors, eg. "originally from Leeds" - didn't
he hail from Bradford? Gary was referred to something like "highly respected
drummer based in London."

Allan's Jazz Cafe gigs will certainly have gained a lot of visibility from
the lead in the E.S., but the Whats-On section comes out on a Friday so I
expect it had more impact on Saturday's attendance (the E.S. is London's
major evening paper).

BTW I must have missed the Gong 25th Anniversary article - when and where
was/is it??

Well, I can't find the original article now (it was on the Usenet
newsgroup 'alt.music.progressive'), so I don't have the specifics.
  It was somewhere in London on the weekend of October 8th, I think;
that's why I wondered aloud about the possibility of Allan being
involved, since he was going to be in London that very weekend.

I should apologize to the entire list for being so lax lately in
regards to the list... I don't seem to have the time I used to have
for "recreational netting," and unfortunately that's led to the
present situation where I feel as if I'm letting folks down. I'll
try to do better in the future.
