I find that the best of the well-known guitar-synth practitioners
(AH, Adrian Belew, Pat Metheny) do not approach synths like keyboard
players, who, with few exceptions (Sun Ra, Joe Zawinul, Richard
Teitelbaum) tend to approach synths like expensive home organs. AH
and Belew are more likely to play with the synthesizer sound itself
rather than just switch between presets.

Despite AH's complaints about the guitar's inherently percussive
nature and lack of sustain relative to a violin, I suspect he
actually *likes* playing guitar; otherwise he could have abandoned
it for violin, an instrument that would more easily allow him to
achieve a sustaining lead voice with the ability to change the
character of a note continuously, a long time ago. I also suspect he
recognizes that there are many subtleties to the tonal character of
the guitar that does not exist on MIDI guitar; on "straight" guitar
where one plays the note on the fretboard, how that note is produced
(hammering on or plucking with finger or with fingernail or with
stone pick or with metal pick, etc.), where on the string was the
note generated, and many many more parameters come into play in
determine the timbre of that note. On MIDI guitar, all these
parameters are reduced to three: note value, velocity (loudness),
and sometimes pitch bend amount. On the other hand, as AH has
frequently pointed out, one can do things with MIDI guitar that
can't be done on a "straight" guitar. It seems like he's willing to
live with the tradeoffs and use one type of instrument or the other,
depending on what the music demands.

I'm not Kingsley, but I do have a PRS CE Bolt-on. I find the standard
neck to be too thin for comfortable chord-melody type playing; but
it's just me; I want a wider neck for the aforementioned approach.
If I had designed the guitar, I would have used a five-position
lever-type pickup switch; the rotary switch makes it impossible to
tell at a given moment by a glance which pickup configuration is in
operation. I do like the Vintage Bass neck pickup and the Deep Dish
II (P-90 emulator in a humbucker design) bridge pickup; the latter
really does vary in tone from a single coil kind of sparkle to a
warm fatness depending on how hard you pick. Still, I'd like to
check out a Klein myself since it's supposed to be very well
balanced and has that Steinberger TransTrem.
Kingsley:
Thanks for turning my on to Wayne Krantz. Here is a guitarist whose
harmonic conception is as advanced as Allan's and whose approach is
strikingly original to boot. Like AH, he puts richly voiced chords
together in unusual ways, yet he doesn't sound at all like him.
Krantz has chops to spare but he doesn't go for the burning single
note legato approach like AH; even when he takes a solo he may
improvise harmonies rather than single notes; occasionally breaking
into a single note run as if to punctuate a phrase.

I have a question about Allan, is he married with children?
Where does he reside, and does he spend time doing other activities
besides music?
I spoke to him at the IMAC in huntington NY. He is quite a musician. I'm
also a big fan and own every album he's put out, and video.
I really appreciate any responses to my questions.

Long time no type...
Welp, the Atavachron WWW server is on hold for the moment. We're
waiting to get this mean li'l HP 9000 E-class server on site and
connected to the campus backbone before we go online. And Allan and
I are still wrangling out some of the details on (primarily) the
discography and what will be included therein, so it may be sometime
this fall before you can point your fav-o-rite Web browsin' client
at Morehead State and get the hypermedia scoop on Mr. Holdsworth's
activities, past, present and future... but with any luck, it WILL
come to pass. I'm still asking for pictures -- send me something,
folks! I've gotten NADA so far, so let's get busy, please! I don't
want to end up taking sole credit for THIS project as well! ;)
Just as a personal aside to anyone who has noticed my absence from
the net-in-general: I have a new job! Yep... a promotion, a raise,
and an ambitious (and completely volunteered) project which I'm
working on at a mad pace in anticipation of Much Better Things To
Come. :) If I am scarce over the next few months, this is why.
I don't remember if I mentioned this, but Allan will *not* be on the
new Pierre Moerlen's Gong project. The logistics just weren't favorable,
and Allan expressed real regret that it didn't turn out.
Other news: Allan was in Nashville over the weekend at NAMM, trying
to garner interest in The Harness (the power-attenuating device he's
designed and built). Had I known sooner, I would have driven down and
seen if the Brewer would like to sample some fresh Market Street Golden
Ale... ah, beergasm. :)
Well, that's all for now. Keep posting, you knuckleheads!

Greetings from Ohio!
So, Graeme thinks I've got too many nice guitars, huh... My wife would agree
wholeheartedly! Truth is, I've owned a lot of dogs over the years. Guess
I'm just compensating for the inadequacy of my youth.

Checking out a Klein is highly recommended, although not easily accomplished
- they're not exactly readily available. As for the T-trem, read on.

Thanks for the feedback, Paolo. He's truly amazing, and your comments nail
the essence. It's been a long time since I've heard someone come along with
such a potent combination of technical mastery, musicality, and uniqueness of
approach. (Maybe since that time in early '77 when I first discovered
"Expresso", aka "Gazeuse," and "Hazard Profile.") To those who haven't
checked Krantz out yet: *do this now!*
T-trem tales: My brother told me that he talked to PRS at the NAMM show last
week, and mentioned his interest in Kleins, and particularly the Trans-trem.
Paul told him to send his Custom back to Annapolis and he'd put a Trans-trem
on it ("We're a machine shop. We can do it!") Jon thinks that PRS may have
been under the influence of a few glasses of wine to promise this so
blithely. Personally, I doubt it's possible. But if it can be done, I'll
post the results, since it seems that there are a number of PRS owners in the
group who might be interested. (Warning from one who knows, however: it ain't
cheap!)

That is unless you live down under... I thought anybody who didn't know
would like to check out an article in JAZZIZ (the U.S. "yuppie jazz"
magazine) to which I'm an occasional contributor. I wrote their last
feature on Holdsworth ('87?)--and I was pleasantly surprised by the work
of John Diliberto--who I thought wrote an excellent, engaging short
feature for the "electric guitar innovators" series. I'd appreciate
reading any of your opinions on this.
As for updates on the activities of Field General Ranchoffnikoff...
I've heard a couple of new ideas at the Brewery AH has been writing for
his new album project--and all I can say is--the music, of course,
sounded brilliant--and in more of a "jazz" vein than HHA...
AH's new contract with Polygram Japan is apparently still in process,
--but Allan for now seems intent on ahead with a different sort
of project--more "jazz" oriented, as he indicated in our interview.
As for the live double CD project, it seems AH is about to secure an
ADAT (digital 8 track recorder) and the necessary mikes--so it would
seem that a "legitimate" live album may be done by some time in '95
(I won't hold my breath, though)!
The good news is--AH seems to be having a decent, productive summer,
and enough leeway to concentrate on some writing--replete
with frequent visits to the nearest micro-brewery--and a few
new projects underway (unfortunately not with Gong)...
Anyway that's all the Atavachron news that's fit to post at the moment...
Hope the rest of you are discovering some good summer listening... A
few things that have caught my ear (some of them not commercially
released yet):
If you like Hiphop/Acid Jazz:
--The Groove Collective/Warner Bros.
--Herbie Hancock's *Dis Is Da Drum* (out in November? on Mercury)
--Urbanator (featuring Lenny White, Breckers, etc) on HipBop.
Otherwise:
--Happy The Man *Live* (Linden Records)
--Material *Hallucination Engine*/Axiom
--The Robert Fripp String Quintet/Discipline Records...
--Black Note (Sony)
--Seal (Warners/Sire)
Any Holdsworth fan-atic listening recommendations???

Subject: ZIPI and Allan Holdsworth?
Date: Tue, 16 Aug 1994 15:56:27 -0700 (PDT)
The Digital Guitar list was recently joined by Matt Wright, one of
the designers of the new ZIPI protocol. ZIPI, which stands for Zeta
Instrument Processor Interface, is a replacement for MIDI developed
by the UC Berkeley Center for New Music and Audio Technologies
(CNMAT) and Zeta Musical Instruments. He made some intriguing
announcements, such as a forthcoming ZIPI compatible guitar
controller/synthesizer and a "high end" ZIPI synthesizer that would
compete against the Yamaha VL1 physical modeling synthesizer in
power and expressive potential.
So what does ZIPI mean for guitarists? It means being able to use a
guitar controller to control synthesized sounds with more of the
expressiveness of a real guitar. It means being able to produce
different synth timbres of the same note by playing it on different spots
on the neck (the C note played on the first fret of the B string will
sounds slightly different from the same C note played on the fifth
fret of the G string). It means that your individual playing style
will have more of an effect on the tonal quality of the synth than
was possible with MIDI. It means being able to utilize all these
real-time control parameters at once without worrying about
exceeding the bandwidth (ZIPI's 250KBaud minimum versus MIDI's
31.?KBaud maximum). It is a well known fact MIDI was designed
primarily for use by keyboard players and ill-suited for use with
alternate controllers such as MIDI guitars, MIDI violins, motion
sensors, etc; MIDI only "knows" about a beginning and an ending of
a note and barely addresses the complex timbral evolution that
happens between. ZIPI was designed to address this deficiency.
What does this have to do with Allan Holdsworth? Well, we know he
has been experimenting with synthesizers for a long time. We know
that he has done some amazing work with the SynthAxxe despite the
limitations that it, as a MIDI controller, imposes on him. What I
feel would help the cause of Zeta and CNMAT in promoting ZIPI to the
rest of the world would be a demonstration of the power of ZIPI; the
considerably greater expressive control it offers over synthesized
sound than MIDI. I can't think of a better candidate than Allan
Holdsworth.
I work for neither Zeta nor CNMAT and I'm not getting any money for
what I'm posting here. As a guitarist with an interest in music
technologies, I can't help but be excited at the possibilities of
ZIPI. Also, I'm not making an official kind of an offer for Allan to
lend his services to Zeta as the premier demonstrator of this new
technology like he did for SynthAxxe but it's such an intriguing
thought I can't help but post it here.

Claire said she would send us the dates as soon as she had them;
they're very aware that Atavachron has a large European contingent,
so those should be forthcoming soon.
Jennifer Moore, who opened for Allan in the U.K. last year (and is
opening for him again this year, as well) sent in the U.K. dates. I'm
sure she'd caution everyone to call the venues ahead of time to confirm
the dates, *as well as keeping an eye on Atavachron for additional
dates*, as these things change right up to the start of the tour,
usually.

I've only seen a sketch of it (ex-Atavachronista Elliot Freedman,
who's now living in the Netherlands sent that, along with a poster
of Allan -- thanks, Elliot!), but it sounded interesting. Does anyone
in Europe have a color scanner and a moment to scan it in? I'd love
to add it to the soon-to-be WWW server.

Well, they *should* be able to drop a TT in if they can fit one on the
non-back-bout-routed Sceptre (Do I have that name right? The steinberger
with a trem, anyway). I've never seen one up close - are they *that*
different to the Floyd in actual construction terms?
BTW if you want to try it, there's a number in the back of GP or GW usually,
which advertises "real Steinberger/Gibson parts". These are I think a
subsidiary of Gibson (the number's based in Nashville, if I remember my
phone bill correctly!)and I phoned them about the TT - they say it *is*
available separately, but costs - wait for it - $450. So get yer chisel
out, and good luck!

I'd do the same thing. The guitars I have now are adequate, but not superior.
Unfortunately, I have to make do with what I have. What I do have is nice, but
"luxury parlor" guitars are really on the back burner. At least Holdsworth
has a name that might convince companies to give him a demo to try out.

It's an interesting guitar. I'm even more interested in the fanned Novacki
fretboard.
But the cost? Stellar.

I gotta check this guy out. I bought Gambale's new one last night. Sounds like
he's
gone through some changes in his life. It's not nearly as sacharrine as his last
one
was. More introspective. I like it. About half the tunes are in a "Satriani"
mode
and the other half a "DiMeola" mode. Something for everybody. Hearing the sweep
technique in a clean toned setting raised a few eyebrows. He can do it. It's
called
"Passages" and it's out on JVC.
Speaking of Holdsworth, I listened to _HHA_ the other day after listening to it
constantly for a while and setting it aside. What a marvelous stylist we have.
He's playing like a madman but still wants more. Cool.
Re: T-Trem on a PRS - I bet they could do it. But have you seen the prices on
guitar
gear lately? Check out the list prices in the latest "Guitar World Giant
Wishbook that
Costs Lots of Money but has No Pictures to Speak of". Ouch. Looks like I'll be
stuck
with the gear I've got for a while now.

Perhaps I'll hear some of his new ideas when he does his clinic at
Guitars West on the 31st.

Trey Gunn's _1000 Years_(Discipline Records). Upon initial
listening, Gunn sounded a lot like Robert Fripp; upon subsequent
listenings, he seemed to come from a Holdsworth direction as well;
some of his solos have that flowing, legato feel to it. Certainly a
Stick player to watch out for.
Steve Tibbetts' _The Fall of Us All_. Excellent soundtrack for a
mental voyage to Bali, Tibet, and lesser known locales. Tibbetts
speaks of approaching music as aural painting; indigo dreamscapes
of synth washes and wavery 12-string acoustic guitar clash with the
fiery blaze of dancing demons as a screaming electric guitar does battle
with thundering drums.
Bill Frisell's _This Land_ takes the listener on a tour of America's
musical heritage as filtered through the guitarist's uniquely quirky
vision. His travelling companions on this journey include a
three-horn section which adds a new twist to his music. Not to be
missed by Frisell fans.
David Torn/Mick Karn/Terry Bozzio _Polytown_. 'Nuff said.
Wayne Krantz _Long To Be Loose_. 'Nuff said.
Marc Ribot _Requiem For What's His Name_ (Les Disques Du
Crepuscule). I don't know how to describe this. Yes, it's a bit on
the strange side, yet it's accessible at the same time. It's as if
Ribot invents a new style of music for each song. Maybe his
composiiton style can be compared to Zappa or Mingus. One thing for
sure, Ribot is a good guitar player; *very* good.

:)
Just trying to pull the boat back on course, folks. I know that
without a tour or a Gong album or *something* concrete in the works,
we've hit the doldrums, so I can understand the listlessness (no pun
intended). But hey, I have a question!
Allan's mentioned the Starr Switch in several interviews, but we've
yet to hear the thing in action (well, *I've* yet to... I don't know
about y'all). So... is Allan actually planning to record anything with
it? I wondered if maybe Zamfir and Michael Crawford had gotten
together with Kenny G to do a Starr Switch trio-extravaganza, and had
hence spoiled the idea for Allan the way all those jazz standards
albums (Mike Stern, etc.) did a few years ago. Ow!! Who threw that?!?
:)
Is anyone else using the Starr Switch (aside from Zamfir, etc.)?
Jeff

Good to see you back on the air, with a couple of wonderful zingers,
no less. Those of you who aren't catching Jeff's act on ALLMUSIC
are really missing something.
Isn't the Starr Switch a device that makes keyboard players immensely
popular and cool, but chopless?

Going... Going.... GONG! (8/24/94)
<<<<<<< ATAVACHRON EXCLUSIVE >>>>>>>
Sometimes unlikely group reunion projects somehow get off the ground...
Our celebrated virtuoso has just flown to Philadelphia for a few days
and IS (after all our clucking here) contributing some guitar solos
to the *GONG* reunion project. Apparently some further discussions
suddenly came about, after Allan had decided the logistics of the
project weren't going to work out--and matters were resolved.
I don't have any specifics on the extent AH will contribute--but Gong
booked three or four days for AH in the studio--so we definitely have
another "AH as guest" project to look forward to. Several other side
projects are also in the works...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A note on AH's "Harness" device: AH will apparently be gearing up for
a production run -- possibly before his European dates in October --
he's in the process, however of working out his business license and
some other logistics. When the time is appropriate I'll post a blurb
on Atavachron (limiting the "advertising" aspect to a minimum in this
forum)--and ask those of your interested to message me, and I'll reply
back with AH's technical description of the device, and the appropriate
pricing/ordering info.
