Re: Come Together/Michelle

Finally bought the much talked-about CD (Come Together: Guitar Tribute
to the Beatles) on which Allan contributed the track "Michelle". I was
plesantly surprised to find Gordon Beck on the keyboards. Needless to say,
Allan's track was THE best on the whole disk. I can listen to some good jazz,
but 80% of the CD just puts me to sleep! Except for the title track and
Allan's piece, I recommend listening to the original versions instead. :)

If you still want to give it a try, I really think you should check
it out (i.e. borrowing a friend's copy) before shelling out the bucks. It's
currently on sale at Tower, so you can save a couple bucks if you act fast.

I recently purchased the new Chad Wackerman cd, which features
holdsworth (I think the name of it is "The View"?). Anyhow, there are two
tracks on this cd where Holdsworth is just incredible. I personally think
this is some of his finest work to date. Track 1 and 5 are just awesome,
especially track 5, which contains an absolutely beautiful Holdsworth solo.

I think some of his latest work is the best. Also, his work on the new
Beatles tribute cd is pure genius. I can hear the Coltrane influence in
Holdsworth's work now more than ever. It's almost as if he is following the
same musical directions Coltrane took. As far as I know, Holdsworth seems to
be the closest thing to Coltrane that I've ever come across (atleast on
guitar!)

Sidenote: I saw John Scofield live in the village a few weeks back, and was
able (barely) to ask him a few questions - before he blew me off. I ofcourse
couldn't help but ask him what he thought of Allan, and he said "Oh, he's
great", and walked off. So much for any serious opinion. Oh, and, I also
asked him what modes and scales he played a particular piece of music in, and
he responded "all of 'em, kid". Jeesh, what a jerk. He should take some
lessons from Allan on how to be a nice guy!

Bill Milkowsky (Down Beat) had the same impression. What puzzled me
about Milkowski's comment in the review of the CD was where he said
something to the effect that if if this marked a new direction for
Allan, he approved. Even though I think the track is great, I really
don't see it as being all that different than his recent work in
terms of being a "new direction," unless you call cover tunes a new
  direction. :)

Maybe he hasn't listened to Allan much since around the time of say, Sand?
His sound has certainly evolved a bit since then...

I've uploaded a picture of AH's black double neck Steinberger
to ftp.uwp.edu (pub/incoming/lists/atavachron/images/dblneck.zip).

As you'll see (if you can unzip it, write me if there is a problem!)
the top neck is elongated and was tuned in fifths (for the intro of
NonBrewedCondiment, among others).

Enjoy!

  ... well, sort-of. :)

I turned on the TV at work Tuesday morning about 3 a.m. (my lunch
break), and while flipping through the channels, something familiar
caught my ear. It was "Fred," from the Tony Williams album _Believe
It_; it was being used as background to the weather forecasts on
ABC's overnight news program, _World News Now_. All I can say is,
"let's hope there's a royalty payment in it." ;) It certainly went
over the fair use limit, I'm sure!

Last week, CBS's overnight news program used an Eric Johnson piece...
I wonder if this is some kind of sign... :)

  Hello again everyone,

Is it remarkably quiet on Atavachron lately, or what? Let's hope it's
the "calm before the storm." :)

Just wanted to share this relevant piece of info with y'all... I
stopped in at the local CD store this morning to check on my pre-order
for _Hard Hat Area_, and was told that it wouldn't be coming out on
2/8 after all. So, after playing "voice-mail-hell" at Restless, I
finally managed to reach a real, live humid being (heh)! I was then
informed that the release date had been moved back a week to 2/15, so
everyone who's looking for _HHA_ can relax for another week.

I'm really surprised that none of our European or Japanese readers
  have sent in a review...

Subject: Acoustic Playing and Soundtracks...

to battle@cs.rpi.edu:

This was in response to a question about why/whether AH would
ever perform more solos on acoustic...

My exact sentiments too! I wonder if I hadn't prodded him on that
subject years ago--he would have never recorded the instrument
on home! One problem is--he hasn't found a good guitar lately
as he had to sell some of the ones he'd had--and wound up giving
another one back to Bill DeLap for further modification (it was
a five str. tuned in fifths)... AH always expressed interest in
getting a good Martin again--but now all the spare cash is
being saved up for a 24 track machine--as his studio now lacks
one... If anyone knows any rich guitar collectors who would
care to loan him one.... ha! I remember the first time I heard
the intro to "Nevermore" and thought the man was God's gift to
the acoustic instrument...

We had also planned to record a low-budget project--featuring
predominantly acoustic solos--called "Imaginary Films."
It's a project I still hope some day we can find the funds/means/time
to do. It was meant to be AH recording composed, sountrack-like music
with mostly non-band instrumentation (i.e. Guitars/synths/percussion,
synth solo, solo guitar-- orchestra, etc.). AH was very keen on
this project--and we came up with some money to record it, but
other tour and recording commitments put it on the back burner--
and the budget really was too low--so AH wound up paying the
money back to label.

"Distance Vs. Desire" on Sand--I'll take a minor credit for being
a catalyst to that being included--as one day I was visiting AH
when he lived in Tustin, and heard the most monstrous, lush
string-synth sound--he was just fooling around with these
breathtaking chords. I sort of went nuts and said "You have to
do something with that!"

I'll definitely forward your text to AH when I see him this
Saturday--and try and carry out a portion (or all of the
"official" Atavachron interview)--although Gordon Beck will be
at the Brewery for a week--and there will be some depraved carrying
on--and probably some very inspired straight-ahead music...

Holdsworth Update: sad to say, the Billy Childs sessions were
cancelled due to a dispute between Childs and changed management
at Gruesome Hill Records. Apparently--though the label had been
stretching out with some more "agressive fusioneering" (as AH
puts it)--take for example the Walter Becker produced band,
Lost Tribe (worth a listen or three) and David Torn's last
record--their "new direction" is to push any more adventurous
artists (like Child's--one of the most inventive jazz pianists
on the West Coast--and a progressive rock fanatic as well)--back
toward the soft, numbing pablum that made vapid stress relief
as a musical art form--one of the great commercial successes of
the Reagan era. (How's that for a run-on sentence? I guess I've
read too much Victor Hugo).

AH is still waiting impatiently for his new record contract to be
finalized and signed in blood. More details forthcoming on this
as soon as formal announcements can be made. I'll talk to Claire
about getting us tour schedules for March/April just as soon as
they're available... All for now/CH.

Boy, that's really discouraging. I have to admit I was kinda shocked
to see Torn recording for WH! :) Who woulda thought? Childs was
certainly one of their most interesting artists. Pretty foolish move
on their part to scare him off. Do you think Childs and Holdsworth
will eventually get this project back on track? I can see some very
interesting music coming out of this collaboration.

Does anyone know what became of Hartley-Thompson amps? I was just listening
to the IOU CD and I still think the chordal sound is about the best I've
heard anyone come up with, including AH. If you'll recall, Allan thought
they were the "best amps in the world". I know our tastes all change, but
that clean sound was hard to beat. I believe Allan used an ADA STD-1 and two
Hartley-Thompsons.

About the Jim Kelly amps, according to Steve Vai's "Devil Take the Hindmost"
transcription in Guitar Player years back, Allan used that amp for the solo.
I played one for a bit at one of the shops on 48th street in NYC, and
thought it was a little raunchy. My all time favorite amp was the Sundown
100 watt tube model, unfortunately it was also the most unreliable amp I've
ever owned.

Any comments?

Most of the contributions seem to have focused on the romantic type tunes,
which is one disappointment I had with the CD. It would have been more
interesting if someone had tackled "Strawberry Fields Forever" or
something else from the White Album or Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts; any of the
more adventurous stuff the Beatles did in their later period. That niggle
aside, I enjoyed the two solo acoustic guitar offerings; one from Ralph
Towner ("Here, There, and Everywhere"), the other from Larry Coryell
("Something"). Both performances were transcendent. I also enjoyed Adrian
Belew's "Blackbird". Allan's wonderful "Michelle" needs no further mention
from me ;-)

Maybe what Milkowski meant by "a new direction" for Allan was that he
thought Allan might be headed towards bebop or free jazz, in the vein
perhaps of Ornette Coleman and Prime Time or Ronald Shannon Jackson's
various groups. I do find it interesting that Allan is planning to record
an album of standards.

Which brings me to another topic occasionally discussed on rec.music.bluenote;
why does an artist have to perform or record a jazz standard or two to
prove that he can "cut it" as a jazz musician? I remember Vernon Reid saying
that he would get flak from critics saying that ol' Burnin' Vernon couldn't
play over the changes of "All the Things You Are" (or some other jazz
standard) to save his life. I am confident that Allan will not only be
able to "cut it" with the jazz standards on the upcoming Holdsworth/Beck
project, but he will do it so well that critics will have to put their
feet in their mouths.

I can't think of another guitarist more capable of performing A Love Supreme
with the same level of passion and conviction as Coltrane did.

Ol' Sco is probably jealous ;-) Seriously, maybe he was busy, tired, stressed,
and just happened to be caught at a bad time. I've never heard any complaints
of Allan blowing off anybody though...

I haven't heard from Claire since January 12, but I am assuming that
she will contact me when the plans are finalized; at the end of December,
she had indicated that Allan probably would kick off the tour in late
March, starting in Los Angeles. Chris Hoard also mentioned in Atavachron

available, so I think all our bets are covered. :) Keep watching this

I am not sure whether this is the right way to post a message
to this group. If it is, I have a few questions I'd like to ask
about Allan's influences. He has always struck me as an extrEmely
original musician, and I am curious to know if he acknoledges any
major influences (guitarists, or other instruments). Some people
in this group compare Allan with Coltrane, and I'm very surprised
with the analogy (were they thinking of any particular tunes, or
harmonic figures ?? or maybe "phrasing"??).

Also, about the "come together" CD, I thought the Abercrombie version
of "And I love her" was quite nice (it didn't "put me to sleep"). "Michelle"
is also really nice, and has the only really exciting guitar solo on the
album. Did anybody spend some time figuring the chord changes in this Gordon
Beck arrangement ? I certainly would like to read them ...

Finally, could somebody come up with a list of the Tony Williams
New Lifetime CD's with Allan, and comment on them ?

Hello Chrondozoids! (sounds like one of AH's improvised SF
words)...

Recently--some of you forwarded some questions to JP, which will
result--in a series of longer and shorter interviews as time
permits over the coming months. Some of those questions--I will
answer in advance--because I've either been directly involved in
the subject--or I've already asked/discussed these topics with AH
at length. If any of you feel I should still bring these points
up with AH after this--feel free to respond to me at this
address.

On Michael Brecker:

I actually took AH along to the Brecker Brothers gig at the
CoachHouse in So. Orange County last year--he didn't need to be
coaxed much. There were several occasions during the 80s in
which AH and MB performed together--if memory serves. One being
the Long Beach jazz fest in '85? It was a while back... The jam
band was George Duke, MB, AH, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White--AH
had been recommended by Al DiMeola--who couldn't make the gig!
Anyway--AH's regard for MB--all I can say is AH absolutely loves
MB's playing--especially his early work in Steps, and
Metheny's 80/81. It's long been a dream of AH's to get MB to
guest on his records. The only question I think is "when" it
will happen--not "whether." In fact the BB's drummer, D.
Chambers is friends with Gary Husband, a steadfast AH fan--as
is the bassist (forgot his name). We hung out with the Brecker's
back stage--and I know Michael hopes and plans to record with
AH. Again, it's been the budget issue. AH wouldn't ask MB to
play if he couldn't afford to pay him a reasonable amount and
cover the airfare from NYC.

In fact MB once phoned me--to thank me for a tape of Sand I gave
him at one of his shows--MB is a consumate gentleman--and I was
absolutely blown away when the phone rang in my office and I
heard "Chris? Michael Brecker... I just wanted to let you know
I loved that tape--it was beautiful, man." AH has also enjoyed
working with Randy--and they did a later "all star" tour with
Steve Smith and Stanley Clarke--among others... I had proposed
a "supergroup" project with AH, Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson, and MB,
at one point--but MB turned it down due to scheduling with
his first series of projects for GRP. All had agreed to this,
except MB. MB could appear on the next AH album, provided
the scheduling/budget dillema can be overcome--it's a definite
possibility. And I'm not implying MB would demand an
extroardinary amount of money--but his manager could easily foul
things up. I observed a great amount of mutual reverence between
MB, AH, and RB when we all were together last year...

On Steely Dan--no doubt AH would jump at the chance! We've
talked about it on several occasions--I think possibly Steely
Dan is AH's favorite American rock band--certainly he loves a
lot of their music. I actually spoke to Walter B. about AH--
Walter said: "I've heard he's one of those who's never happy with
what he's recorded," as if it was one of those great musical
ironies of our time. Walter was definitely aware of AH, and
held him in regard--and seemed interested--but it wasn't an
appropriate time for me to press the matter of a guest spot--being
I was interviewing him for Jazziz. Speaking of that if I asked
AH--if I asked him about W/T being selected as one of the greatest
jazz releases of the past ten year's, he'd totally dismiss it and
say--it was just because a friend of mine happened to write for
the publication... When I find out D. Fagen is ready to again
work on a new project--I'm sure I can get in touch with him
(I have his home phone)--and discreetly propose this--I'd feel
no shame in doing that--and AH certainly wouldn't mind.

To McCabe--thanks, friend--GREAT LIST. To Malcolm--my
sentiments too on Jamie Muir--I remember interviewing Fripp in
80--he talked about Jamie with reverence, and I think on both
occasions I interviewed him (79 and 82...?) he went out of
his way to dwell on anecdotes about Muir--my impression was,
Fripp was very fond of Muir's time with KC--Bruford, by the
way, told me on several occasions Muir was a MAJOR influence--
but I'm blown away--again--AH played with Muir??! Never knew
that! Please--some background! I do remember AH and BB hanging
out--still friends--after KC's 84 show in LA--and Fripp being
in his usual "rude coma" after the show; Fripp brushed off AH,
along with countless other industry luminaries and musicians
no doubt, (probably distressed at his playing--which was not
as good that night as some previous KC shows I'd seen). AH
didn't seem to mind--he never was a big Fripp fan anyway--he
always found Fripp a little too mathematical--too rehearsed in
his solos. Anyway, I'll ask about Muir--but Steely Dan and
the Breckers are old territory between us... Thanks Again.

Allan has good taste in Brecker. :) I like 80/81 a lot. And the early Steps
work is outstanding--PARADOX really smokes!

>It's long been a dream of AH's to get MB to

That pretty much answers my question, Chris. If you have the chance, you
might mention that there are those of us who would _love_ to see this happen
sooner rather than later.

>In fact the BB's drummer, D. Chambers is friends with Gary Husband, a

Heh heh! How 'bout a Chambers/Brecker/Holdsworth/J. Johnson gig! I'd go for
that. :)

Right. This actually brings up an interesting question, but not one for
Allan. I wonder why Mike hasn't ever asked Allan to take part in one of his
own projects.

>AH has also enjoyed
>working with Randy--and they did a later "all star" tour with
>Steve Smith and Stanley Clarke--among others...

I saw their gig here in Boston. It was a great chance to hear all these guys,
but the group thang wasn't really all that happening. The best part was when
Allan got pissed because someone in one of the first few rows was taping the
show. He kept pointing, trying to get someone to yank the guy and finally
ended up leaving stage to get some action going. The guy was eventually
dragged out of the theater. :) Pretty amusing.

>I had proposed
>a "supergroup" project with AH, Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson, and MB...

Yeah, that's a group with great potential. Erskine is one of my favorite
drummers.

It may be bogus; Compact Disc Connection carry no stock, and rely on
their distributors to update their database (if I understand their blurbs
correctly). I seem to recall someone mentioning on one of the Usenet
newsgroups that this had been cancelled, but it's possible that it's
been resurrected. Btw, the "9/93" in the listing means that it was
released in Septemper, 1993... in which case I think it's likely that
we would have seen the CD in stores by now if it had actually been
  released.

Hear hear! It's a shame that they were unable to get adequate
funding to do the project they'd planned to do this year. However,
Allan seemed quite agreeable to pursue it at another time, so it
  may happen eventually.
