When I saw him in Alexandria (10/92) and on the video, they go into the final section of ' Material Real,' the final cut on Road Games. Eddie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 10 Jun 93 08:21:14 -0400 From: cutair@ubeulx.ub.umd.edu (Andre Cutair) Subject: Scales in "Road Games" All: I've been listening to the "Road Games" album quite a bit lately, in particular the title track. I've noticed that the guitar solo is played over the same changes used for the verses, with the solo lasting for the space of two verses. During the first verse, Allan employs the A minor scale, an appropriate choice for soloing over the A minor chord that dominates the verse. During the second verse (second half of the solo), Allan switches gears and uses a different scale for soloing. It has a whole-tone'y feel, and it eventually resolves back to theA minor scale toward the end of the solo. Would anyone care to elaborate on what's going on here? BTW, this certainly isn't the only time Allan uses this scale or a variant thereof. I would guess it's most useful for soloing over a section that doesn't have a lot of harmonic movement (e.g., "Peril Premonition", solo section in "Devil Take The Hindmost", etc.). I really like the tension (and eventual release) that this scale creates and am looking forward to your ideas on its execution so that I may include it in my own playing. Thanks! Apparently, AI is talking with Allan > and trying to get him to agree to it. > > Anyone have any information on this? Not about the re-release per se, but I do seem to recall that Road Games was originally planned as a full lp release before "the management" decided that Allan had to add vocals to it and to pare it down to a 6-song "mini-lp". If that was true I'd love to hear the release as originally planned. Jeff Preston said, in a different context: > I've been told by another Atavachron reader that Audiophile Imports > does have it, but it's $30.00 (ouch!). I don't have any experience > ordering from Audiophile Imports, but I'm led to believe that many of > these importers deal in very small quantities of stock, so it would > probably be advisable to call ahead to be sure that whatever you're > wanting to order is available (or when it's expected back in stock). Audiophile's catalog was fairly impressive in its groupings of music by artists, so that one could find related works, even though this did make the same release appear in multiple places in the catalog. By I've been to turned off by their high prices (Torsten de Winkel/Helmut Hattler cds listed in there are for $28 or more, Tower had em cut out for $5.95 each), and by their pushy attitude. When I called for a catlog they told me they were just doing a huge mailing and it was too late to add me, unless I wanted to just place an order. Otherwise I would have to wait a few months to get the next catalog. They tried pushing a few titles on me and said I'd just wait. The catalog arrived a long time later. As I said, the catalog was impressive, and obviously a work of someone who cared about the music. But I found something really strange and to me questionable that I don't see in other mailorder catalogs. These guys offer dubs on VHS of laserdiscs they have, for $49.95 each! Gee, how nice of them to offer a service for those without Laserdisc players, but isn't this a little bit too far into the grey market or black market? I'm amazed they have the balls to do this, and to charge so much. It doesn't even appear they sell the laserdiscs, just bootleg dubs. Now, I'm not naive about such things and I've seen underground video collector catalogs, but I never saw a legit business advertising such questionable merchandise. While they seem to imply the laserdiscs are rare or perhaps out of print, many of them can be ordered from Spectrum Music Videos at 1-800-84MUSIC (located somewhere around Phildelphia). Hmmmm. Audiophile is not a business I really plan to support. - Malcolm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 10 Jun 93 20:48:59 EDT From: battlec@cs.rpi.edu Subject: the things you see Does anyone know if there's a North American distributor for it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 10 Jun 93 23:43:52 -0400 From: cutair@ubeulx.ub.umd.edu (Andre Cutair) Subject: Audiophile Imports current address All: For anyone interested, the current address for Audiophile Imports is: Audiophile Imports P.O. Apparently, AI is talking with Allan >and trying to get him to agree to it. The mention of this concerned me; since Restless had been unwilling to pay Warner Bros.' asking price, it seemed pretty unlikely to me that a small retailer would be able to justify the expense of licensing it. So, I called this fellow up to check it out, and without intending to, I put the guy on the defensive. He sounded pretty upset that this information were being spread over the Internet, which aroused my suspicions that perhaps he was not on-the-level (I think my lack of objectivity at this point was understandable considering Allan's past run-ins with bootleggers -- and after reading Malcolm's posting in this digest, I'm sure I was predisposed to think the guy might be somewhat shady). For now, I reserve judgement, but I may owe the man an apology for being suspicious of him. So, I gave Allan a call shortly afterward to see if he knew anything about this. He said he *had* spoken with the fellow who ran Audiophile Imports, but that had been some time ago. He reiterated that _Road Games_ is completely out of his control and that it was possible that Warner Bros. were talking to people other than Restless. He said he'd have someone look into it though. While I had him on the phone, I asked if he had anything new in the works. He said that he was working on a new Andrea Marcelli release, and said that he would be on a few tracks on Chad Wackerman's next album, which is slated for release in early 1994. He also said that he had studio time lined up for the fall to record his next release (and despite another budget cut for the project by Restless, it will be a "band" album, he said), and that the material was coming along nicely (I forgot to ask about "Rococo" and "Low Levels, High Stakes," rats!). When I asked him about the expected U.S. dates for the fall, he said they probably would not tour the U.S. again this year because of a lack of booking commitments (which surprised me... at both the shows I saw last year, the venues were packed to the rafters). I asked him how many shows he would need to book and at what price, in order to make an Autumn tour feasible, and both numbers were surprisingly low, I thought. Does anyone in the midwest/east have any connections into nightclubs or student activities committees? If so, you might want to contact me to trade notes. He said October would be a good target, if any interest in bookings were to appear. On a different subject, I found an interesting disc at a local record store yesterday. It appears to be a Japanese import, bearing the title "Best Works Collection / Allan Holdsworth". I'm trying to figure out where all of the material on this disc came from; all of the liner notes other than the writing credits are in Japanese, and (in spite of my last name), I can't read Japanese. Some of the tracks on it are from "With a Heart in My Song" (with Gordon Beck), which I have; there are also apparently a couple of tracks from "The Things You See" (which I don't have). Well, here's a list of the tracks on the disc: With A Heart In My Song From the album with the same name... Diminished Responsability [sp] Apparently from "The Things You See", with Gordon Beck. At The Edge Apparently from "The Things You See", with Gordon Beck. Actually seems to be a laid-back version of the track "The Things You See (When You Haven't Got Your Gun)", which appeared on the IOU album. 54, Duncan Terrace The version from "With a Heart...", not the version from "Secrets". The Gathering Don't recognize this; writing credit says Gordon Beck. The Things You See Apparently from the album of the same name... Halfway House Don't recognize this; writing credit says Gordon Beck. Finery Don't recognize this; writing credit says Holdsworth / Young / Mathewson / Stevens. From one of the John Stevens albums (I don't have any of these)? Typo? (apparently there's a track "Finally" on "Touching On"). Rocks Don't recognize; writing credit says Randy Brecker. At times, reminds me of some of his work with Bruford. Actually sounds a little like Bruford on drums, come to think of it... Gone Sailing Short acoustic piece (about a minute), similar to some of the acoustic work on Velvet Darkness.
