Something for Ron (couldn't get through by email!) Hi Ron, For that "authentic" Holdsworth guitar sound, I'd recommend that you pop into a guitar shop and try playing through a compressor unit (gives the sustain). Add some distortion (for more sustain and, well, distortion), and Bob's your auntie's live-in-lover. Hope this helps ! Pete ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 30 Mar 93 07:49:10 +0100 From: "Pete Cole" Subject: Holdsworth - anyone similar ? Hi there : something for steve@mcdd1@ibmpcug (nothing appears to be getting through today !) : Not likely ! The man is *totally* unique. Thank goodness ! But if you want to try something different (but by another totally inspired guitarist who sounds like nobody else, has been around for ages, but nobody ever seems to listen to etc), look out for Cloud About Mercury by David Torn, on ECM. Bill Bruford plays on it, but that's about the only link to Holdsworth apart from the incredible music, and (of course) OTT guitar. This has been a public service announcement ! I picked up a brochure for the Glasgow Mayfest today and to my sheer delight discovered that Alan and the band will be playing at the Renfrew Ferry on the 21st of May. The show is at 7pm and tickets are 7pouds or 5pounds with a concession. I last saw Alan in Manchester last year and for anyone who hasnt seen him live i urge you to get a ticket. The man defies belief. Ive never seen a guitarist with so much musicality, technique and raw emotion. If youre a guitarist this will be THE gig of youre life. All of the dates for May were garbled (looks like Akira's fax machine was having a bad day), but I will call Akira this evening and ask him to re-send those dates. I'll tell you what I can "decode" from the May dates, but don't take them as gospel truth until I get a confirmation, please. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and distribute the digest, since we do have some Italian readers, and those are the first dates coming up. I only have very modest equipment (cheap Fender amp, Yamaha (Fx 80?) DSP, and an American Fender Strat.), so, this makes it harder ofcourse. Now, my DSP has around 80 preprogrammed sounds built in, and of these, around 5 or 6 are similar to the Alan's tone. Most of these sounds are all distortion/chrous, distortion/ reverb, and distortion/delay based, and all include some compression and equalization. Of these, one or two sound vaguely like what Alan's sound is like, but the more familiar you are with Alan's sound, the more you notice the little differences. I have been told that there are expensive Digital Signal Processors that actually have a built in Holdsworth effect, but I have never heard any. A couple things I really like about Holdsworth unique tone is the uncanny control he has over the attack/delay of the notes he is playing. For example, the opening "theme" (for lack of a better description) of "Proto Cosmos" is an example of this incredible control. Another characteristic about his sound that I like is how smooth his distortion is, without sounding to grainy (excess noise), and his sax-like tone. I have seen him live twice and just love him live. If you do know of a live album, could you tell me what label and CD number I can use to get it. Also, do you have a complete discography of his stuff, I would like to get everything he has ever played on, but am having trouble finding out everything he's played on. Guitar Player Magazine, October 1991 Reader's Soundpage Competition ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================= ========================= 54 Duncan Terrace =========================== ========================= Allan Holdsworth ============================ ======================================================================= This laid back tune is from the Secrets album and features Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, and Allan Holdsworth on guitar. The soloists are: Alan Pasqua on piano, JJ on bass, and AH on SynthAxe controlled synthesizers (a layered, plucked harp sound). There is also a version of this tune on the There's A Heart In My Song album on JMS by Gordon Beck & Allan Holdsworth. With its slightly extended form featuring a piano solo and a reedy SynthAxe solo, this version of the is more introspective. The structure of the tune on the Secrets album is: Intro: drum fill... I, I, III (head), Piano Solo: I, II, IV, I, II, III Bass Solo: I, II, IV SynthAxe Solo: I, II Outro: III... end chord! Part II is a development of the kinds of phrases in part I. The basic chordal movement in Part III, the head of the tune, is used for part IV. It is transposed a half step down and is presented without the passing chords... Really beautifully put together! I've marked the location of the first dramatic splash with !!! in part I. On clean guitar it might be played as a B5 chords. I suggest: (x, 2nd fret B, 4th fret F#, x, open string B, x) When comping over this section, part I, for solos the following more colourful voicing seems to be played by AH: (x, x, 11th fret C#, 8th fret D#, 7th fret F#, x) The chord marked by ()()(), again in part I, could, in the solo sections, be replaced by this D# minor 9th: (11th fret D#, 9th fret G#, x, 10th fret E, x, 9th fret C#) The chord marked by [][][] in part II, when comping, seems (?) to be replaced by: (9th fret C#, 11th fret G#, x, 8th fret D#, 5th fret E, x) As I haven't made any attempt at transcribing the rhythmic aspects, just the voicings and harmonies, you will require a certain familiarity with the tune. The equipment certainly has something to do with it, but equally important, IMHO, is Allan's technique. Listen to the last two notes in the guitar solo from "Joshua" (on the "Secrets" album): it could be just my phonograph (yes, I've got it on vinyl - don't laugh!), but I hear a distinct "trilling" going on. I don't have any idea how Allan does this, although it appears in a couple other songs, but I'm almost certain it's not equipment induced. As Eddie Van Halen constantly reminds us in his playing, a picked note and a pull-off/hammer on sound wildly different. The amount of pressure the fretting hand applies can produce a variety of tones. I hear a lot of this in Allan's work. The solo on "Sphere of Innocence" (from "Wardenclyffe Tower) is a good example. As I believe Allan mentions in a recent "Guitar Player" interview, simply placing the fingers on the frets as the notes sustain, that is, letting the pressure of each finger excite the string, as opposed to picking it, will yield a more legato sound. >From: napier@de.UCSD.EDU (Jim Napier) >I've noticed talk about an upcoming ftp site Other than back issues of >Atavachron, what will the site have? > [ Moderator's reply: Good question. :) The discography will be ] > [ there (or what's completed of it, I should say), as well as a file ] > [ which lists mail order sources for the legitimate releases. Torn, on that album, influenced by that lineup and the ECM attitude, creates what I can only describe as 'outworldly' music. Those insane inflections & the use of the harmonizer... and I think the tunes are really well crafted. Torn did a Soundsheet for guitar player magazine a few years ago. It's a piece done in his home studio with sampled guitar bass lines, looping, synth (Linda McCartney) finger-style drums (actually quite cool the repeating line that he plays), and an outrageous, terrific solo. I believe the piece was called No Borders. I wonder how he's doing. Apparantly Steve Tibbetts, the equally cool (his music is much more primal, less electric, and more dynamic) Minneapolis-based guitar player / ECM artist, did a benefit for Torn about a year ago. I had heard that Tibbetts worked in a twin cities record shop. If you want to >fully flesh out the discography, it might be a good idea to post a "form" for >entries so that list members can plug in their data. You could periodically >post a list of titles for which you're still lacking data and list members >could send any info they have to you (or whomever puts the list together). That's a another good question (about the level of detail), and the "form for entries" is an excellent idea, Lynn. You suggested in private e-mail looking into a package called "recdb"... I have seen mention of this, but am not really sure what the particulars are for this software. Has anyone here used recdb? If so, would you like the dubious honor of inputting our Holdsworth discography data into it? ;) Heh heh... I'm very eager to see those volunteers lining up to do the dirty work. :) You see, I try to have a life occasionally. :) It's not always practical, but I try. Lately I have had so many irons in the fire because of our impending systems replacement it's been all I can manage to get the digests put together and sent out in a semi-timely manner. It's obvious that as far as the discography is concerned, I have certainly dropped the ball. I'd really, really appreciate it if someone could pick up where I've so negligently left off, because I have lots more work to do *just* to get Atavachron migrated to its new home on our soon-to-arrive Hewlett Packard HP9000-G50. Lots of improvements are coming, folks. Lots. Anyway, I was thinking that just getting a "finder's guide"-type of discography might be useful (title, copyright date, label, catalog number) or sufficient. But I suppose it'd be more to our as-yet- unvolunteering volunteer's credit to go "whole hawg," as they say here in the hills of eastern Kentucky, and include as much as can be found on a particular release. So here's someone's chance to grab some glory, and I'll sweeten the pot: I'm going to try to get some tour t-shirts from Akira (or whomever) in coming weeks, and I will send our volunteer a t-shirt upon completion of the discography ("completion" being defined as "all the goods on all the legit releases we know about today, 4/21/93"). If I can't scam some shirts, I'll give you the shirt off my back... well, actually, it's not on my back (and didn't get much chance to be -- I left it at a relative's home in November, where it's being stored and well-cared-for): An official 1992 _Wardenclyffe Tower_ tour t-shirt; color, white; size, XL. What more could you ask? Don't answer that. :) In administrative matters: Have you ever tried to use your mailer's REPLY function to respond to an Atavachron posting, and had your mail rudely bounced back to you? Well, that should not be a problem any longer. I fixed something that I didn't think could be fixed, so now you may use REPLY at your leisure. Thanks to Geoff Thorpe for stimulating the proper brain cells which led to this amazingly simple solution! :) Speaking of Geoff, he is our first subscriber from New Zealand. We now have 148 subscribers in 11 countries. I just thought you might like to know. Fax (1) 4621363 48 minutes, 20 seconds - CD Holdsworth appears on 5 of the 13 tracks here, but don't let that discourage you from getting the Soma disc - it's great. It's like a high energy progressive mid-eighties Tubes session with a spastic drummer and an Emerson-enamored keyboardist. Holdsworth is the icing on the cake. I wish they'd made a second album. The session guys are the icing on the cake. The prog-instrumentals are furious and fast. I got my copy from Audiophile Imports (see the back of Guitar Player magazine). David Shawn, the other guitar player here isn't bad either. The layout, design, production and all is really expensive - the 48 track recording with Synclavier/Fairlight doesn't hurt either. The second, "Alien Time" is much better - probably Holdsworth's most melodic solo outside of "Endomorph." At the fade, you can hear him blasting high-speed notes into the stratosphere. The disc would be similar to "Tears for Fears Meets Holdsworth", although the singer has an odd, Robert Smith (Cure) quality to it. Very odd. For a Holdsworth die-hard I'd recommend it, but unless you like semi- expensive sounding pop with fine guitar snaking in and out of the vocals it may just irritate you. I'd stick with the Soma and avoid the Strange Advance - I keep my copy just to prove that Holdsworth's stuff could fit into any pop hit anywhere and WORK. -Todd. Of course the fact that it's a tube unit may have something to do with it. I use heavily modified Heartfield EX-2 and Charvel Model 4 guitars with EMG electronics/pickups as well as Floyd Rose vibrato bars. Excellent.
