Well, I was wondering about that myself until Anil's interview
(Anil's *excellent* interview -- thanks!) arrived. If Skuli is in the
U.S. on a student visa, I think our Immigration officials would have
grounds to revoke it if he were to appear on any albums released in
the U.S. during the duration of his visa. If that's the case, I hope
they don't find out about the REH video. I also find myself wondering
what potential harm I may have inadvertently caused by posting the
recent itineraries to the rec.music.* newsgroups on Usenet, since they
mention Skuli as appearing with Allan (and you never know *who* reads
these newsgroups). I'll have to look into this.

If anybody is looking for a copy of MVP's "Truth in Shredding"
featuring Holdsworth and Frank Gambale, I have found a source for it.
Musician's Friend, a musical instrument mailorder store, is
advertising the disc for $13.88 in their Winter/Spring 1993 catalog,
page 80.

                    Musician's Friend

                    (503) 772-9723 FAX

They have a 30-day money-back guarantee, and CD's are *not*
listed as being excluded from this guarantee. (Cassettes are
excluded, though, so perhaps this is an error in the statement of the
guarantee. Ask first.)

I have never ordered from Musician's Friend and have no
association with them. However, I do know that some people were
looking for this disc unsuccessfully.

Subject: I played Allan Holdsworth's guitar!

This week I managed to catch Allan on two dates of the mini-West Coast tour
that he's just wrapping up now; first in Santa Cruz, at the Kuumbwa Jazz
Center (REALLY small room), on Wednesday night. After the first set my
friend and I popped into the pub next door, and while we were cooling it in
there, Allan came in and located himself at the other end of the bar. Mike
looked at me and said, 'Go on, man! Buy him a Guinness!' Judging from what
I knew of his beer tastes through extensive pouring over 'Uncommon Chord,' I
had long since concluded that Allan Holdsworth wouldn't be a Guinness
drinker, so I didn't think he'd enjoy one... but I didn't have very much time
to muddle over this dilemma, before lo and behold, Allan ordered himself one.
This threw my whole beer concept for a loop.

Anyway, on Saturday, a friend of mine (a noted Stick player) was opening the
Allan Holdsworth show at New George's in San Rafael, so I got to play roadie
and go hang out with the boys up there. We arrived just as the band was
finishing their sound check, so met them briefly as they left the stage and
we set up the Stick gear. Skuli seemed very interested in the Stick, and
asked a lot of technical questions about it-- I think we may have a convert
somewhere down the road... and Allan talked a little bit about his 10-string
melody stick, and his experiences with Emmett Chapman (Stick inventor). I
hadn't realized that the Stick he built for Allan was a 1/2-scale neck, it's
just this little tiny thing... it seems Allan is kinda into the smaller
necks, maybe that explains how he reaches those impossible chords... anyway,
we ran off for a bite and then went backstage and waited for zero-hour... one
by one Allan's band filtered in: first Steve Hunt, who talked a little bit
about the tour so far-- they're only on the road ten days this time, it
seems-- then Skuli Sveresonn (uh... how do you spell that?), and we chatted
about the Stick a little more; then Chad Wackerman, and we talked to him a
bit about his playing-- did you know that Chad has played a number of gigs in
LA with Emmett, and in fact he himself owns a Stick? (But like all other
famous musicians, never really plays it) Then finally Allan himself, who
picked up his guitar and started warming up right away. Incidentally,
Allan was drinking a Coors that evening. Allan still maintains that Coors is
the best American mass-produced beer, because it's not pastuerized, so
retains much more flavour than the others. Strangely enough, he chose Coors
even though Anchor was available on tap, as were a number of import
bottles... oh well, anyway, I digress... so Bob (the opening act) went on and
the crowd went gonzo. Honestly I don't think I've ever seen as appreciative
a crowd at a Stick show. You gotta love those AH fans. Skuli stuck his head
out from backstage numerous times to watch, and everybody else took at least
a peek. Anyway, finally, Allan & band went on. Allan started out a little
stiff, but by the end of the set he was as jammin as I've ever seen him (he
only did one encore that night, whereas at SC he did 2). I stood at the
mixing board during the set and watched Allan's sound man/road manager
work... great guy, but you should have heard him go off at the light man in
the middle of the encore! Anyway, from there I noticed Neal Schon lurking in
the crowd, and after the show Jeff Watson snuck backstage and chatted a
little...

Ok, anyway, I've name-dropped way too much here... sorry there's not too much
technical content this message, but who else can I boast about this to except
you guys?

The new issue of Tower's Pulse! magazine indicates that CMP will be releasing
a new Chad Wackerman album "later in 1993" (this later is relative to a June
release date set for Ed Mann's new CD). That's something to look forward to!

I got to talk with Allan on the phone for a while today -- nothing
major or new to report really; we just had a semi-long, friendly chat
about the recent California shows, Anil's interview, and we even
talked for quite a while about the Internet. In fact, Allan expressed
some interest in checking out what some of the local network service
providers had to offer (but he said all he had lying around the house
was an Atari that he once was using for some musical purpose). I told
him I'd look into some of the San Diego area service providers, and
fax him some information. I know of two Internet service providers in
San Diego: OnLine Communications and Holonet -- does anyone know of
more? Anyone know anything about Ataris and modem availability for
such beasts? ;)
I also reminded Allan that Skuli had been really interested in the
net stuff, and told him that if Skuli were going to school at a major
university in New York, there was a 99.9% chance he could get access
for the asking. He said he'd pass that along to him, because he was
really intrigued by the whole networking concept.
Allan also said that Akira has been very good about passing along
faxes and letters, and that he doesn't always have time to reply to
them all, but he does enjoy hearing from us. If you would like to
drop Allan a line, I'm sure he'd love to hear what you have to say
about _Wardenclyffe Tower_, the REH video, or even just a "thanks"
for doing the interview with Anil... here's the address:

         Allan Holdsworth
         c/o Mr. Akira Yada
         Arrow Field Productions Inc.

         Van Nuys, CA 91405

         (818) 988-1246 (fax)

That's all for now. the April European dates should be finalized
within the next week or so, so we'll have those here as soon as they
arrive.

Hi Guys,

Not often I actually contribute to this wonderful organ (ooerr Mrs!!)
but I couldn't keep this information to myself...

The Man will be playing at the Bath Festival this year (which is, rather
predictably I think, in Bath).

Date: Sun 23rd May 1993
Tickets: 7 pounds and 9 pounds sterling.

You can get in touch with the booking office on 0225 463362, and they
will send you a booking form (no telephone bookings!).

If anybody's interested, Jan Garbarek is playing there on the Monday too.
Not a guitarist, admittedly, but a damn fine saxophonist.

If anybody from the UK is going to this gig, get in touch and we'll try and
get together - might be fun to meet some other Big Al fans.

I'll try and post a review after the event...

(Jeff - does this news warrant an Atavachron digest all of its own?!)

PS Thanks for the interview Anil -

Yep! The two that all my computer-in-the-know friends are
using are Netcom (netcom.com) and Portal (cup.portal.com). The head
of Netcom is bobr@netcom.com, and Portal information can be gotten
from:

Portal Communications
20863 Stevens Creek Blvd. Suite 200
Cupertino, CA 95014

I hear from some computer-literate people that Portal's user
interface is lousy (unless you have the graphic front-end on your
computer, available only for Commodore Amigas I think). Netcom is
supposed to be quite good, though. Lots of my computer expert friends
are happy with it. Dunno how beginner-friendly it is.

In any case, both of these services provide *reliable* Internet
connections and USENET news service.

My girlfriend is doing a Masters in sound recording (she bumps into Rick Wakeman

Annabel didn't know about Allan's fascination with Star Trek!

OK, onto another topic...

I'm a *novice* guitar player. I've had guitars for over 10 years, but I'm
still lousy. One of the things that has really stopped me from developing (in
terms of motivation) is the lack of a decent electric sound. As
Holdsworth-favouring, & perhaps Holdsworth-influenced guitar players, can you
suggest a cheap way for me to get a sound that a Holdsworth fan might like
(sustain?). Can you suggest just one or two simple effects additions that
might make a world of difference? I have *nothing*. I don't even have a
proper amp: I'm using a bass amp right now, no effects whatsover.

Thanks for any advice. I suppose private email might be best for this...

Jeff,

Thanks for a great interview, please pass this on to Anil. I especially
liked the bit about the Japanese compilation which Allan hadn't heard of. I
saw this advertised mail-order here in the UK and wondered what it was.

I hate to bug you with loads of e-mail but can you get A.H. merchandise at
all? I'd love a decent photo or shirt.

I look forward to a tour. I saw him at a small badly published venue last
year for the first time. The previous year (I think) I had my ticket
refunded when he pulled out due to his Level 42 commitments.

PS. I know this is sacrilege but who does music similar to A.H. I quite
like Scott Henderson but he's nowhere near as good.
