Subject: A general whine

I'd like to say a few quick words about Allan's career right now.

I think it's fairly important to remind everyone to *buy* Allan's
new album and not tape it etc., I'd say it's safe to say that his
career is in a fairly precarious state at the moment, and some
sales would perhaps kickstart Restless' sorry butt into supporting
Allan a bit more than they've been doing.

Allan owes Restless one more album and after that he's free to go
elsewhere. One can only hope his next label treats him better than
Restless/Enigma/Relativity/etc...

And look out when he leaves... on tap is a LIVE ALBUM that he promises
will be a killing release. He says it's "too valuable" for him to give
to the blunderheads at Restless, so he's saving it up for his next
label.

I'm continually confounded by the wealth of talent record labels
screw over. And I'm talking about mega-musician-gods like Holdsworth,
Steve Morse and Rory Gallagher here as well! It's just so unbelievably
pathetic at the treatment they've received. We're lucky these
guys even continue recording and performing!!!!!!!!!!! Quite
literally, in fact!

At any rate, the interview is *DEFINITELY* happening at last come
December, so you've got another month to let ideas ferment in your
head. More interesting questions are welcome!!

BTW, if anyone out there wants to help me get the two Tony Williams'
Lifetime CDs with AH on them, please drop me a line! (beg, beg)

Subject: Holdsworth at Berklee redux

Regarding Lynn Rardin and Dave Lane's resopnses to my offhand
comment in Atavachron #28 about Allan's "off night" at Berklee
in '85:
My comment was based on a couple of things. First, having seen
Allan the previous year with Willis & Husband, and in '87 with
Johnson, Husband, & Hunt,Chad Wackerman, both of which were
unbelievable shows, I didn't think the Berklee gig was on the
same level. A lot of the time Gottlieb sounded tentative and
unsure of himself, and the tunes didn't pulse and move the way
they did with Wackerman or Husband. It wasn't the kind of
outright bad night I saw the following year when he opened for
Chick Corea and his Synthaxe kept malfunctioning, however, and
I didn't mean to give the impression that it was. Second, I
was there with several of those "teenage guitar geeks" to which
Dave referred-- I was teaching school at the time and brought
several of my students who were interested in guitar.
DiMeola's musical concepts just seemed more accessible to them,
although I'm not sure the reasons for that were entirely
musical. As for me, I found Holdsworth's set much more
interesting and exciting just as Lynn and Dave did. But being a
Holdsworth aficionado to begin with, I don't hear his music the
same way someone new to it does. The kids I was with, to a
person, thought DiMeola "blew Holdsworth away." Granted,
they're not exactly a scientific sample of "potential
Holdsworth fans," but I thought their response bore thinking
about.

Regarding ATAVACHRON: I'm only a johnny-come-lately here, but I
want to thank Jeff and everyone else. Since I moved out of
Boston I've lost touch with a lot of what's going on in the
"loud jazz" and "prog-rock" scenes and this is a great way to
get back in touch. I'm also glad to see that there are a
number of Dave Stewart nuts here-- I am too, and I wrote to
Paolo with much of the info that appears in Atavachron #30.

Picked up _WardenClyffe Tower_ at Tower Records in San Jose this
weekend. Great CD! I like it better than _Secrets_. It is more
consistent, doesn't have any big downs, IMHO. It also doesn't have
any songs that reach out and grab me as much as City Nights or
Peril Premonition. But solid playing throughout nonetheless.
It has the obligatory vocal performance and the now obligatory
scary unsettling Wackerman song. Get it!
Also got the new Lifetime compilation on Columbia Jazz Masters.
Great to hear Proto-Cosmos and Red Alert on CD rather than
scratchy ol' impossible to replace vinyl. I had never heard
Million Dollar Legs before. Very funky, lots of horn and string
arrangements, Allan playing funky backbeat ninth chords. Interesting,
but Believe It is the real thing.
The liner notes to the Lifetime CD offer a lot of history of the band.
Apparently, Tony and Allan recorded some stuff right before Believe It.
One session was with Jack Bruce and a vocalist named Tequila(?). Another
session was with Tony, Allan, and Jaco!!!!!!!! How cool would it be to
have these? Even if they are as poorly recorded as the Velvet Darkness
sessions, they would be worth a shitload o' dimes.

Quick word to Anil: Thanks for the work you're doing on the interviews.
The Steve Morse interview was great! I'm sure the one with Allan will be
even better.

This is my first posting - sometime I'll relate the tortuous and glorious
path by which I came to be an AH fan, but not yet - it had something to do
with ALLMUSIC though...

I belong to an AH BBoard on the Prodigy network, and there are a few
willing to promote the music. It's set up as a subject within the topic of
Rock Music (A-K), so that anyone scanning the subject headings can read the
title, then the postings if interested. The other day there was a posting
to the effect of, "Who is this guy, we just booked him in the club where
I work". After a followup post, I asked for more details. There is no more
info available now, but Allan is booked to play the Rhythm Cafe in Orange
Co., CA on 2/19/93. Tickets are on sale now ($16) by calling 556-CAFE. This
guy, who now plans on checking out the show, is going to try to get a list
of other dates. If I get them, I'll pass them along.

Thanks for letting me know that Million Dollar Legs and Believe It are out
on disc - I'll be looking this afternoon.

As far as WardenClyffe Tower, I had a rather negative review of the CD on
my BBS that I should reproduce here, but the guy (a keyboardist) was rather
enamored with the keyboard solos. I felt the album had some depth and really
oddball musical bits here and there - the title track really caught me off-
guard with the power chords contrasted with massive open string ringing
chorused stuff. The synth patches were rather PPG'ish on this track. I
rather enjoy the disc - between WardenClyffe Tower and the new Tribal Tech,
"Illicit", I'll have many happy listen hours ahead here.

Now I just wish he'd tour Minneapolis.

I don't want to sound depressive (and anil knows how much I support
the arts after purchasing the most expensive dregs ticket in history)
but I think that allan's chances of finding a decent label are
next to zero. There may be an avant garde label
willing to go through the motions but
any record slime (oops, executive) would look at the situation and
say "hmmm the guy been recording for 15+ years, his albums sell
what 50 to 100K, no thanks I'll pass". The last couple
of Holdsworth albums were produced for 10K a peice. of which
the record company probably did not drop in a dime.
What pisses me off the most is how companies don't even
bother going through the motion (ie, announcing that the artist
has a new album out, try to get advance press/media coverage when
an artist has a concert, or sponsor performances in cities where
the band has never played before, etc). hell, I won't even bother
going into the crock of shit known as media that claims to cover
the art/music scene.

As much as I would kill to hear a live album, the economics of doing
one are way out of allan's reach (ie we are talking about 50K to 100K
to record one or two nights).

that is why we must appreciate each moment as it happens and
not take for granted that someone will bother to continue recording
or go on tour.

support the arts now. ours is,
the struggle for acceptance.

Subject: Soft Machine's _Bundles_

I neglected to mention that thanks to Jason Julyan, I am now the proud
owner of a CD copy of Soft Machine's _Bundles_, which of course features
a young Allan Holdsworth on guitar throughout. For those of you who have
yet to hear _Bundles_, I think it'd be hard not to compare it to the
Gong material, but this is a bit more psychedelic than the Gong albums
where Allan appears. Long, spacey grooves are the order-of-the-day on
_Bundles_, and they make good use of them. "The Man Who Waved At Trains"
is one such groove, and it along with the next track, "Peff" remind me
of a cross between Ian Carr's _Belladonna_ and Tony Williams' _Million
Dollar Legs_. Oboe? You bet! A personal observation (which you should
feel free to dispute and/or comment on, please): On this album, as on
others from this period (including _Velvet Darkness_), I hear Allan
playing some very Zappa-esque lines at times. Am I alone in detecting
this? I don't really recall Allan ever claiming Frank Zappa as any kind
of influence, but I may have missed it somewhere. This album has been my
sole experience with Soft Machine -- can anyone else throw in a suggestion,
considering that I enjoyed _Bundles_ (give it a 7.3 out of 10)?
One odd thing on _Bundles_: Allan plays a 12-string guitar in a 0:59
solo piece titled "Gone Sailing." Not only that, but it appears to be
tuned rather strangely, as well!
Speaking of odd things... has anyone noticed anything strange about
Allan's track on "Arabesque," from Gong's _Time Is The Key_ album?? :)

I saw the show in Northampton, Mass. in late September and as I was
experiencing that for the first time was quite naturally blown away.
I missed the names of the band members and I wonder if someone could
post them (I apologize in advance for any redundancy as I'm new to
the list). The drummer was especially wild. Did he lose his sticks
at any of the shows you folks saw? He lost it three times during
heated cymbal attacks and once hit Allan in the ass, as if deliberately
throwing it at him. Allan didn't even open his eyes...

With regards to "Bundles" - I enjoyed it a lot, really. I especially liked
Allan's long solo on "Hazard Profile Part I" and the "Land of the Bag Snake"
sections where everything segues. I found the keyboard playing on the disc
somewhat Pink Floyd-ish. I also found a "Soft Machine Best Of" with
selections from this particular album and the one afterwards with another
guitarist, John Etheridge, on those tracks. They were okay, but I really
enjoyed the music as a whole.

I've never been able to find "Time is the Key" on CD anywhere. Any hints,
anyone?

I found "Tony Williams Lifetime: The Collection" in the used bins of a local
CD shop. What a great pair of albums. Holdsworth's tone is like a foghorn of
despair at times, but I really enjoyed his roaring, over-the top, go for
broke, seething approach on those two.

I wonder what is the likelihood of CMP signing Allan. It seems like
a pretty good record label for Allan's music. After all, CMP has
been putting out such works as Trilok Gurtu's solo albums and albums
by Lonely Universe ( which includes Mick Karn and David Torn ),
Shoba Gurtu, Yusef Lateef (sp?), and Mick Goodrick. I don't think
any of these artists would have been picked up by a so-called major
label. Goodrick had a deal with GRP records but he apparently
decided to go with CMP instead. Most importantly, as far as Allan
is concerned, Chad Wackerman's solo record, _Forty Reasons_, was put
out on CMP.

BTW, _Forty Reasons_ is an excellent album; performances by all
musicians ( Allan, Chad, Jimmy Johnson, and the keyboard player )
were stunning. The title track has some unusual Mike Stern-like
clean guitar improv by Allan.

I am not affiliated with CMP in any way. I'm just impressed with the
consistent quality of the recordings and the artistic freedom given.

Does anyone know anything about this? Any unreleased or rare material

Also, I'm in a slight bind re the interview, I can't get a damn copy

if you can believe it, they don't even have a bio sheet or photos

re: CMP

When I spoke to AH a few weeks ago, I also suggested CMP to him, and
he said that CMP insists on using their house producer Walter QUintas
for ALL their recordings. He said he's unwilling to give up control
to anyone. I've also heard that CMP runs a very tight ship when
it comes to recording its artists. They have to fly out to the German
studio they use, and be subjected to a rigorous process. Quintas is
supposedly fairly dictator-like at times I've been told (not by AH).

The label is basically run like ECM used to be -- everything is
an "in-house" production.

BTW, both allan and his manager said they're likely to go with a
Japanese label in the future and simply license out each release
to someone in the States, sort of like Kazumi Watanabe does
with Gramavision or whatever. This way they can't lose rights
to albums (a la the big Enigma fiasco) and can pull out of a deal
relatively unscathed unlike previous arrangements.

I think another problem with CMP is that distribution really sucks
for that label, even worse than Restless' treatment of WC.

Unfortunately, I have no idea who distributes Great Expectations CDs in the
U.S.

Subject: can't get a copy of WC Tower...

Anil Prasad mentioned his difficulty in getting a copy of "Wardenclyffe
Tower". About a month ago, after having scoured the stores in the area
looking for a copy, I happened to come across a USED copy for $9!

The only suggestions I can come up with are to check Noteworthy and/or
the Tower Records mail order.

Complete with the oversized, superimposed photo of Allan and his SG
on top of the red thingy in front of the buildings? Wow, that's an odd
thing to have on the front of a computer trade publication...

Yes, very reminiscent of Pink Floyd. I enjoyed it, too, but I still
hear these Zappa-like lines in Allan's playing, especially on "Hazard
Profile Part I." I must be the only one. :)

I don't know, but I'm guessing this to be another unauthorized release.
It sounds as if there might be a segue question here, coupled with Allan's
and Akira Yada's interest in perhaps moving to a Japanese label. Perhaps
a major Japanese label would be able to put a stop to the exploitation,
by exerting more legal pressure on the offenders. I have been led to
believe that the Japanese *in general* have a less-than-healthy respect
for music copyrights (i.e. CD rentals, etc.), but I don't know if that
extends to domestic copyright holders or not. A thousand apologies in
advance for any (wrongly-) perceived Japan-bashing. ;)

Subject: Wardenclyffe Found!

Everytime I visit one of the local Tower Records stores, I check to see if
any Holdsworth items are in stock. I usually find a nice little plastic card
with The Name on the top, and nothing in front of it. (I'd bet that if I made
the trip up to the Hollywood store they'd have something! An aside: The
Hollywood Tower has two buildings, one dedicated pop, the other to classical.
The classical side of the street had a section labelled Comedy Music. It
contained Barbara Streisand albums ;)

Anyway, on an occasional lunch hour, I'll pop into a tiny hole-in-the-wall
mall record shop just to see if the have anything interesting (not very
often, but it happens). This time, as i was looking through the Various
G-H-I section, I found a single copy of Wardenclyffe Tower!

My review isn't any different than all of the previously posted ones (i.e.
I *like* it!). I thought it was more coherant than Secrets, making it all
the more enjoyable. One thing really startled me, though, and that was the
intensity of the bass playing! Really rattled the floor boards!

Well, I'll continue my search for other AH gems....
